Critical Visual Methods for Fieldwork at a Distance
Responding to constraints posed by the pandemic, this workshop will offer new avenues to adapt and complement field-based research. We will introduce design methods and digital tools to enter everyday spaces at a distance while critically questioning what we see. Through lectures, discussions, and exercises you will learn to:
- Use digital tools to navigate and document places within their spatial and temporal contexts;
- Create conceptual diagrams to critically examine site configurations;
- Translate research findings into story maps.
We aim to equip participants with new tools to reconfigure and expand existing research plans with exciting visual methodologies.
About the Workshop instructor(s) / host(s):
Aparna Parikh Dartmouth College
Dr Aparna Parikh is a feminist urban geographer, critically marshalling her architectural training in creative methods to challenge dominant forms of knowledge production. She has taught online and in-person for the past decade, most recently instructing an exercise where digital visual methods are an entry point to analyze (in)justice in Philadelphia. This exercise was introduced to students with no prior training in cartography or geovisualization, and forms the basis for this workshop.
Karen Paiva Henrique University of Western Australia
Dr Karen Paiva Henrique is a human-environment geographer, planner, and designer. Her work employs visual methods to examine the unjust implications of urban climate adaptation and envision just development trajectories amidst concurrent crises. Dr Henrique brings extensive experience with visual analyses and conceptual diagramming, exemplified in her contribution to the IPCC Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5°C (SR15).
Audience, Eligibility, and Capacity
We welcome graduate students who conduct field-based research and are broadly interested in qualitative methods, visual inquiry, and/or critical geography. No prior training in digital visual methods is required. Join us if you are looking to adapt or complement your methodological toolkit for field-based research!
We will select up to 20 graduate students to participate in this Workshop. Selection will be based on your AAG membership status, your research needs, and time of registration. If you are selected, we will notify you ahead of the Workshop and provide you all the Workshop details and session links. If you are selected, the expectation is that you will participate in all sessions of the Workshop.
Workshop Schedule (all times are in U.S. Eastern Time):
Monday, June 14 Asynchronous and Synchronous 8:30-10:30 am
Introduction and Digital Data Collection Watch a short pre-recorded lecture introducing “critical visual methods” and this week’s mini-project. Then, join us for a live session. You will introduce yourself, share your expectations, and learn basic data collection guidelines. Today’s asynchronous task: select a site and retrieve imagery for your project.
Tuesday, June 15 Asynchronous and Synchronous 8:30-9:45 am
Image Annotation and Diagramming You will learn Miro to annotate visual data (think thematic content analysis using images instead of text). We will discuss how to use critical annotation and diagramming to answer specific research questions and explore software use in greater detail. Today’s asynchronous task: make conceptual diagrams for your project.
Wednesday, June 16 Asynchronous
Office Hours We will check in with you individually about your project.
Thursday, June 17 Asynchronous and Synchronous 8:30-9:45 am
Sharing Research Findings with Story Maps You will learn ArcGIS story maps, using images, text, and diagrams effectively to present findings and depict the ‘bigger story.’ Today’s asynchronous task: build your own story map.
Friday, June 18 Synchronous 9:00-11:00 am
Let’s ‘look’ at our stories You will present your final story map and receive feedback from your peers. We will wrap up the workshop with a discussion of key takeaways and how you think critical visual methods might be useful in your future research.
